Discussion:
[Wikimetrics] Error message when creating new cohort

Dear Wikimetrics community,

While trying to create my first cohort today, I continually got the error message "Error! Server error while processing your upload." I checked the training, FAQ, etc. and couldn't tell what the problem could be. Is the server down? If not, might anyone have a sense of what could be going wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Lea

Hi, Leanora. I have been using it throughout the day (and late last week),
periodically receiving the same message. I also can't run a report right
now. I presume it's a server error that will be fixed soon!

Hello,

It turns out the database was overloaded with connections from Wikimetrics.
That means one of two things:

1. wikimetrics is becoming more popular and we have to optimize / scale out
2. wikimetrics has some bugs that don't clean up connections properly

Either way, the connections got recycled and everything seems ok now. If
you're still getting errors, please file a bug in bugzilla and attach your
attempted cohort (if privacy allows it). You can always write here if you
need help filing a bug.

After monitoring this problem for a day, it looks like there's definitely
an issue. Wikimetrics is holding on to mysql connections and not closing
them. Until we figure out the problem, please just let me know when you
have errors and I'll kill the connections manually. I've just done that
and you should be ok for now, but please do write to the list if you get
stuck.

Ok, after yet another report of failures today, we found and fixed the
problem. It turns out our user's max connection setting was reverted to 10
by the labsdb infrastructure. Coren, as always, came to the rescue and all
is fine. This problem should *not* recur so I will close the bug. Please
reply if it happens again.

The connection starving issue is fixed. The issue you're having Lea must
be related to a bug in cohort validation / uploading. Or a problem with
the format of your file. If you send us the file or upload it to bugzilla
on a new bug, we can take a look. Thanks for the report as always :)

Hi List!

Hope everyone had a lovely holiday season. I accidentally forgot to update
this thread the the cohort upload had been fixed up a bit. Please re-try
any cohorts that failed and let me know if there are problems.

Thanks!

Hi Dan,
Yuan, our other intern, is also experiencing this problem when trying to
upload new cohorts. Were you able to find a solution for Lea?
Thanks,
Jaime

The connection starving issue is fixed. The issue you're having Lea must
be related to a bug in cohort validation / uploading. Or a problem with
the format of your file. If you send us the file or upload it to bugzilla
on a new bug, we can take a look. Thanks for the report as always :)

Hi Lea -- if you continue to have problems, can you send us the cohort?
Best,
-Toby
Unfortunately, I got the same error message this morning. I’ll keep
trying! Thanks for your efforts in fixing the bug!

After monitoring this problem for a day, it looks like there's
definitely an issue. Wikimetrics is holding on to mysql connections and
not closing them. Until we figure out the problem, please just let me know
when you have errors and I'll kill the connections manually. I've just
done that and you should be ok for now, but please do write to the list if
you get stuck.

Hello,
It turns out the database was overloaded with connections from
1. wikimetrics is becoming more popular and we have to optimize / scale out
2. wikimetrics has some bugs that don't clean up connections properly
Either way, the connections got recycled and everything seems ok now.
If you're still getting errors, please file a bug in bugzilla and attach
your attempted cohort (if privacy allows it). You can always write here if
you need help filing a bug.

Hi, Leanora. I have been using it throughout the day (and late last
week), periodically receiving the same message. I also can't run a report
right now. I presume it's a server error that will be fixed soon!
Jami
Dear Wikimetrics community,
While trying to create my first cohort today, I continually got the
error message “Error! Server error while processing your upload.” I checked
the training, FAQ, etc. and couldn’t tell what the problem could be. Is the
server down? If not, might anyone have a sense of what could be going wrong?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Lea
