Discussion:
[Wikimetrics] WIkimetrics and Commons

Hi Wikimetricians,

1. Does Wikimetrics count files uploaded to Commons as new pages?

2. Does Wikimetrics count new versions of files that are uploaded to
Commons over old versions as edits?

3. Is there an automated way to see how many pageviews and thumbnail views
happened to pages and Commons files after those pages and Commons files
were touched by editors who are noted in a Wikimetrics report? Viewership
is one way of measuring impact, and I think it would be interesting to
measure the impact of a Wikimetrics cohort in this way.

Thanks!

No, I do not think so. this describes the pages created metric:

No, we have no plans to implement these changes, we are doing basic
maintenance work in wikimetrics but no new development for
the foreseeable future.

Thanks,

Apologies for the following vague message, I'm travelling and have limited
access to my laptop.

Pine, I think file uploads create a file description page which should get
counted by the Pages Created metric. I believe others have used this on
wikimetrics in this way. It would be easy to test: make a cohort of just
one person who you know uploaded some files and run that metric for that
person for the timespan when they created the files. If it works as you
expect, report back. There should be some way easy way for our community
to count those uploads.

They count as pages created, but not in the main namespace (ns 0). Does global metrics differentiate between main namespace and non-main namespace pages?

For images you look to namespace 6 for pages created, once created, I understood them to be edits to the file rather than new pages rather. Nuria and Dan, can you clarify why if this wouldn't be the case?

As for cohort and page view data intersections, there is not a tool that I know that considers page data and user data together, but looking pre-post at the page views may be helpful.

Thanks,

Jaime

Viewership is one way of measuring impact, and I think it would be
interesting to measure the impact of a Wikimetrics cohort in this way.
While this isn't something Wikimetrics can do, there are other tools to
look at pageviews of pages improved by a cohort. GLAMorous 2
<http://tools.wmflabs.org/glamtools/glamorous/> [1] calculates the number
of pages improved by media uploaded and the pageviews of those pages by
category, pagepile, or user.

What do you mean by "thumbnail views" and how does that differ from
pageviews?

I also feel compelled to add that just as viewership is a facet of impact,
pageviews on wiki projects is a facet of viewership. Who knows how much
content and how many curricula have been enriched with our freely licensed
pictures of cuttlefish or the dome of Santa Maria del Fiore? (Seriously,
if anyone is looking at answering questions like these, I would love to
hear about it!)

Hope that helps--

Cheers,
Amanda

Also, if it's any help to mention....

I have been very happy with this SUL tool, which I have used to confirm
user names, edit counts, and which areas of Wikimedia / Wikipedia new and
experienced editors are editing. I set up a VLOOKUP that I use to confirm
user names, and use the user ID as the control / unique identifier
(i.e., User ID : 27454434).

https://tools.wmflabs.org/quentinv57-tools/tools/sulinfo.php

example:
https://tools.wmflabs.org/quentinv57-tools/tools/sulinfo.php?username=BrillLyle

I set this up for the WM NYC 2015 Metrics document, as the first step for
gathering metrics is gathering names of users who are participating in
editathons.

And yes, I am ashamed how low my Wikidata edit count is. :-)

p.s. Also notice there's another tool -- for unified accounts only:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth

example:
